As the late great Jimi Hendrix once said, "castles made of sand melt into the sea, eventually". You may ask what in the world this has to do with acupuncture and facial rejuvenation. Let me explain.
In more ways than one, our outward appearance is our castle. It is the way in which we express our inner life and how the world inevitably views our state of health. We've all had that experience of feeling well-rested and generally OK, only to have a friend see us and exclaim, "Wow, you look tired!" ...hey, thanks alot! While this is not the most pleasant experience, it can serve as a wake-up call that what we've become used to as feeling 'generally OK' is not actually so good.
At this point, people may start buying expensive moisturizers and getting facial peels, going on extreme cleanses and dietary restrictions, or even going as far as consulting a plastic surgeon. What people often do not realize is that, no matter how beautiful your castle looks, if it is made of sand it is bound to melt. So what can be done? We need to shore up the castle, we need to add some concrete and some steel and make the inner workings of the body as strong and beautiful as we look.
Enter acupuncture, or more specifically what is now collectively called 'cosmetic acupuncture' or 'facial rejuvenation'. People ask me all the time if acupuncture can make them look younger. I generally answer this with another question. If you’ve had insomnia for years and after treatment were suddenly able to sleep soundly, how would that affect the way you look? If you are constantly dealing with an upset stomach and after years of discomfort finally found an effective remedy that enabled you to enjoy food again, how do you think you would look differently? Or if you are always stressed out and can never quite relax enough, but after treatment could truly appreciate all that is good in life, how might that change your appearance? And the answer to this question is almost always the same, "Hmmm, yea that makes sense. So what's next?"
A Typical Facial Rejuvenation Treatment
A facial rejuvenation treatment from a licensed acupuncturist does not differ significantly from a traditional acupuncture treatment. The practitioner will do a comprehensive intake which will include questions that you couldn’t in your wildest dreams imagine are related to your chief complaint. This, along with a complete medical history and several diagnostic techniques such as feeling your pulse, examination of your tongue, and palpation of potentially useful acupuncture points will also be performed. A treatment protocol will then be chosen based on your particular constitution and pattern of disharmony. There is a beautiful concept in Chinese medicine which states, ’yi bing tong zhi; tong bing yi zhi’ which means ’different disease, same treatment; same disease, different treatment’. In other words, one of the wonderful aspects of Chinese medicine is the degree with which a treatment can be customized for each patient’s unique constitution and presentation.
The main difference between a traditional acupuncture treatment and a facial rejuvenation treatment lies in the addition of specific acupuncture points on the face as well as dietary and supplement recommendations. The needles used on the face are much finer in diameter and are manipulated only on a superficial level compared to those on the rest of the body. These points are chosen based on the location of wrinkles, discolorations, and areas of sagging. So how do the needles help to erase wrinkles, even out areas of redness, and lift sagging skin? Any time a needle is inserted into the skin, the body reacts by sending red blood cells, critical nutrients, and by stimulating a local immune response. This response is due to the body thinking a foreign invader has penetrated it's first line of defense, the skin. The needles used are made of surgical-grade stainless steel and are left in the skin for about 30 minutes, then gently removed. Soon after they're removed, the body quickly realizes that there really is no threat and calls off this response. But in the meantime, those areas of the face which drive us crazy have been flooded with a new supply of blood and nutrients. This in turn stimulates the production of collagen, the protein responsible for the tightness and youthful glow we seek.
Often times, the patient will notice looking more rested and calm after only one or two treatments. However, significant results are generally seen after a full treatment cycle which consists of ten treatments over a 4-5 week period ranging in price from $1,000-$1,200.
What good is it to look young, but feel old? Or on the other hand, who wants to look older than they feel? What we all want is the outer manifestion of our inner life and beauty to match each other. Facial rejuvenation acupuncture can help put us on the right path. The time is now, build up your castle from the inside out and feel good about who you are and how you look.
